Turning My Voice into a Vacation Fund: A Podcasting Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: The Power of Passive Income
Utilizing my voice has become a way to fund my adventures. How, you ask? Through podcasting! I recently returned from a three-week exploration of New Zealand, and the entire trip was made possible thanks to the revenue generated from my podcast.
Over the past 18 months, my co-founder and I managed to earn $30,000. While this may not be a life-changing sum, it’s quite impressive for a side hustle, especially considering we both held full-time jobs and had no prior experience in digital media or audio production. We embarked on this journey during our free time, which truly showcases the potential of generating income online.
The takeaway? If you’re not figuring out how to transform digital endeavors into financial gains, you might be missing out on opportunities. Start your journey, even if you feel unprepared, as there will never be a perfect moment to begin.
The initial episodes we recorded were far from good. We were anxious, our pacing was off, and we struggled with microphone technique. Those episodes never saw the light of day; we didn’t want to subject our audience to them. Even the first few episodes we shared publicly were only marginally better. Yet, starting somewhere is essential. If we had waited until we were entirely comfortable, we would have never launched.
At some point, you must share your work, gather feedback, and refine your approach as you progress. People tend to be supportive and understanding at the start—capitalize on that initial encouragement to gain insights for improvement and generate new content ideas.

Section 1.1: Building Early Momentum
The day you release your inaugural podcast episode is typically when you’ll attract the most attention. Take advantage of this moment! Encourage friends to share the episode on social media, organize an in-person launch event, or consider hosting a giveaway with a partner. The objective is to generate as much buzz as possible at the outset.
This early momentum can serve as motivation and help you gather followers, kickstarting your podcast's visibility. I also suggest preparing at least six episodes and a solid content strategy before launching to ensure you can maintain a consistent publishing schedule and keep your audience engaged.
Establishing an email list is vital for owning your audience, along with creating a private group where you can interact directly with your listeners.
Section 1.2: Identifying Your Niche
Avoid making your podcast for everyone; that would be akin to trying to boil the ocean. Instead, concentrate on a specific group of individuals you can uniquely influence and strive to address their challenges.
Our podcast targeted young people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in a disadvantaged area of Melbourne. This group faced job losses, limited support, and social isolation. We saw an opportunity to create a positive social impact while also developing a monetizable product—a true win-win.
Since we were the only ones addressing this issue, we quickly established ourselves as leaders in the space, attracting funding, sponsorships, and even media attention.
Section 1.3: Overcoming Doubt and Criticism
When I announced my intention to start a podcast, reactions were mixed—some excitement, a bit of support, but mostly indifference. Comments like “Not another podcast” echoed in my ears. Many questioned who would listen, let alone pay for it, citing a saturated market that would make monetization difficult.
However, here’s the harsh reality: many fail to earn income due to their limiting beliefs, not their skills. Now, those who once doubted me are asking how we achieved success and if they can replicate it.
Remember, don’t heed criticism from those whose advice you wouldn’t value, and don’t take guidance from individuals who haven’t accomplished what you aspire to achieve.
What My Experience Means for You
Anyone can tap into the world of online income. If you seek financial freedom, begin establishing that pathway with digital assets. It doesn’t need to be through podcasting; if you prefer video, launch a YouTube channel, or if writing is your strength, consider Medium.
The current platform economy favors creators, and the best approach is to be authentically yourself.
