When it comes to aging, I prefer insights from those who have truly experienced it—individuals 65 years or older. Their perspectives, shaped by years of life lessons, are invaluable. Unfortunately, society often overlooks the wisdom of seniors, particularly in the United States.

We tend to isolate our elders in senior living facilities, a practice that shields us from confronting our own mortality while simultaneously denying us the rich experiences they can share. Ageism in this country frustrates me.

At 77, I refuse to be confined to a facility. Instead, I embrace life fully and share my knowledge with others.

How One Second of Mindfulness Could Change Everything

I once knew a man named Peter, who tragically passed away in 2013 after a fall at the age of 74. I provided him with weekly massages and knew him well. His death, caused by a slip while inspecting a property he was renovating, made me reflect deeply.

Despite his wealth and zest for life, one moment of mindfulness could have changed his fate. Imagine if he had paused for just a second to assess the safety of that unfinished stairway.

Mindfulness: A Tool for Awareness

Practicing mindfulness through meditation, tai chi, or yoga cultivates an awareness that extends into daily activities. If Peter had engaged in such practices, he might have recognized the potential danger and made a different choice.

The Tai Chi Master’s Lesson

During a lesson, I jokingly asked my tai chi instructor about the relevance of self-defense techniques if faced with a mugger in a dark alley. His response was simple yet profound: “A tai chi master would never venture into that dark alley.”

This highlights a critical aspect of mindfulness—making conscious decisions to avoid potential danger. Just as your mother probably advised you to “look both ways before crossing the street,” mindfulness urges us to make deliberate choices to protect ourselves.

One moment of awareness can prevent tragic accidents.

Incorporating Mindfulness into Daily Life

Practicing mindfulness can help mitigate risks that might seem trivial to a younger person but could lead to serious injuries for seniors. Engaging in activities like meditation, tai chi, or mindful walking can build this essential awareness.
