Chapter 1: Uncovering Your Enneagram Type
Determining your Enneagram personality type can often feel overwhelming with the plethora of online quizzes available. However, it's crucial to understand that only you can truly validate your type; no test can guarantee complete accuracy. While these assessments can provide some guidance, the key to identifying your type lies in self-reflection and understanding the nuances of the Enneagram system.
For those seeking clarity, one of the most effective assessments I’ve encountered is the two-question test. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity, as it helps narrow down your type by focusing on fundamental groupings within the Enneagram. Instead of answering a long series of questions, you only need to respond to two multiple-choice queries, which can significantly pinpoint your type—provided you accurately identify your alignment within these triads.
You can find and try this test here, and I’ll delve into further details about its underlying concepts below. This test will help you determine 1) your Hornevian Triad and 2) your Harmonic Triad. These two elements are sufficient for accurately identifying your Enneagram type.
Section 1.1: Understanding Your Hornevian Triad
The Hornevian Triads categorize different strategies we employ to meet our needs: assertive, withdrawn, and compliant (sometimes referred to as "earning"). Named after the German psychoanalyst Karen Horney, each triad represents a distinct approach to interaction.
The Assertive Stance (Types 3, 7, and 8)
Individuals in this category assertively seek to meet their needs in their environment. They are often more proactive and energetic than other types, sometimes displaying competitive behavior. While their assertiveness can be constructive, it may also lead to egocentric or aggressive tendencies, as they prioritize their agenda above all else.
The Compliant Stance (Types 1, 2, and 6)
These types attempt to fulfill their needs by adhering to established standards. Characterized by responsibility and cooperation, they often navigate their lives with a strong sense of duty. However, this can lead to feelings of rebellion if they feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities.
The Withdrawn Stance (Types 4, 5, and 9)
Members of this triad often withdraw from their surroundings to meet their needs, focusing more on their inner world than external interactions. While they value their independence, their tendency to disconnect can sometimes make others feel neglected.
Section 1.2: Identifying Your Harmonic Group
The Enneagram also consists of three harmonic groups that reflect how you approach conflict and challenges. This classification is effective because individuals generally fit well into one of these groups.
Reactive Triad (Types 4, 6, and 8)
When faced with difficulties, reactive types seek an emotional connection to the issue at hand. They prefer to express their feelings openly, which can sometimes result in dramatic or intense interactions.
Competency Triad (Types 1, 3, and 5)
These individuals often adopt a detached approach to problems, relying on logic and rationality rather than emotional engagement. While their ability to remain calm is beneficial, it can sometimes hinder deeper emotional connections.
Positive Outlook Triad (Types 2, 7, and 9)
In the face of conflict, these types work to reframe negative situations in a positive light, striving to maintain hope and optimism. However, they may overlook deeper emotional issues in their pursuit of positivity.
Now that you have insight into both the Hornevian and Harmonic triads, identifying your Enneagram type should be more manageable. Personally, I identify with the Assertive Hornevian Triad and the Reactive Harmonic Triad, placing me as an Enneagram Type 8.
