Yet, even amid challenges such as mental health issues and fluctuating motivation, I manage to maintain some consistent habits. Simple acts like brushing my teeth daily and taking regular showers reflect that consistency. It’s not always about grand gestures; small, consistent actions can also make a difference.

Why Do You Struggle with Consistency?

To start your journey towards consistency, identify the reasons behind your inconsistencies. What obstacles are in your way?

In my case, I spent many years grappling with undiagnosed mental health conditions. Recently, I've begun treatment for ADHD and bipolar disorder—two conditions often linked to inconsistency. This has been my personal hurdle.

I'm still figuring out my own definition of consistency, and that’s perfectly fine. You don’t need to have all the answers right away; consistency is a collection of the habits you uphold.

At its core, consistency is about patience—patience with yourself and with the process. It’s important to remember that consistency isn't built overnight. It often takes months, or even years, to establish.

Research shows it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. Whether you aspire to work out three times a week or complete a book, keep this timeframe in mind as you practice consistency.

Pushing Beyond Your Boundaries

To cultivate consistency, you must push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Motivation doesn’t magically appear; it begins with taking action.

Want to keep your space tidy? Start by bringing out the vacuum, even if you’re not in the mood. Need to meet sales goals? Be assertive with your clients and encourage them to consider your offerings, even if it feels uncomfortable initially.

If you aim to become a person others can rely on, practice active listening, seek out resources if necessary, and honor your commitments. Write down promises if you struggle to remember them.

The Role of Practice

To become consistent, practice is essential. You won't achieve perfection right away, but when you stumble, it’s vital to get back up and try again.

Engage in the activities you wish to be consistent in. If your goal is to work out three times a week, start by committing to once a week. Gradually increase your frequency as you become more comfortable.

Establishing consistency is not an instantaneous process and requires clarity on your goals.

  • Commit to it.

One technique I use is placing sticky notes around my environment to remind me of my goals. Currently, I aim to write daily, regardless of whether I produce a full article. I keep motivational notes on my bathroom mirror and set reminders on my phone to encourage my writing routine.

By setting tangible goals and surrounding yourself with reminders, you’ll keep your objectives front and center.

Understand that consistency is not an easy feat; it demands commitment and effort. You must engage with your goals daily. By establishing clear objectives, practicing regularly, being patient, and challenging yourself, you’ll find that you can achieve consistency in whatever endeavors you pursue.
