# The Surprising Benefits of Keeping Your 24-Inch iMac in the Kitchen
Written on
Chapter 1: The Kitchen Move
In January, I took the plunge and relocated my 24-inch M1 iMac to the kitchen, hoping to revitalize its use. Initially, I thought this would be a short-term arrangement, planning to eventually move it back to the studio either out of necessity or due to someone else's suggestion. I never imagined it would become a permanent fixture.
As we progress into May, the iMac remains on the breakfast bar, utilized daily and even accumulating a light dusting of icing sugar at times. Despite this, I find it hard to part with it. Here's why.
Section 1.1: Managing Multiple Macs
Operating a review brand focused on Apple products inevitably leads to owning several Macs, which can be both exciting and costly. The challenge lies in finding appropriate uses for each device. While coordinating multiple iPads can be more complicated, planning for various Macs still requires some creativity.
Subsection 1.1.1: My Mac Lineup
Currently, my collection includes:
- 16-inch M1 MacBook Pro (main production machine)
- Base-level M1 MacBook Air (writing machine)
- 16GB M1 Mac mini (versatile studio and backup production machine)
- 2017 27-inch iMac (testing machine)
So, where does that leave my 24-inch iMac?
Section 1.2: Daily Usage of the 24-Inch iMac
The 24-inch iMac is my first stop each morning. While waiting for my kettle to cool for that first cup of coffee, I check emails, publish drafts for our authors, and glance over my to-do list. Although I could do this on my MacBook Air, the convenience of having the iMac right there on the breakfast bar makes the process seamless.
Like the M1 Mac mini in my studio, the iMac operates flawlessly, whether it's from a cold start or after being left idle for days with numerous applications open.
Chapter 2: The Flexibility of Kitchen Computing
In the video "Top 5 Issues with the M1 24” iMac that we DIDN'T Expect!", the presenter explores unexpected challenges associated with the 24-inch iMac, shedding light on its performance and usability.
My early morning routine is not the only way I utilize the iMac. I thrive on changing my work environment, often alternating between my studio and kitchen. Having the iMac permanently stationed in the kitchen allows me to shift scenery while working on blog posts or participating in Zoom calls. It's also incredibly useful over weekends when I need to quickly check in for work.
Despite my iMac being the basic 8GB model, it excels at its primary function: serving as a reliable and competent home computing device.
Section 2.1: Considerations for a Kitchen iMac
If you're thinking of placing your iMac in the kitchen, there are some factors to keep in mind. My device has certainly faced its share of kitchen-related challenges, including being covered in flour and having a few children clumsily type on its keyboard. While there have been moments when we had to temporarily relocate the iMac to protect it from little hands, its portability makes moving it around easy—similar to a MacBook.
However, the kitchen is also the busiest room in my home, often plagued with shopping bags and delivery boxes that threaten its pristine screen.
In the video "M3 iMac Review After 45 Days - Avoid My Mistake!", the reviewer discusses their experience with the M3 iMac, which may help you decide if it’s right for you.
Despite being aware of the potential hazards, I have no desire to remove my iMac from the kitchen. It’s a robust device, with its stunning design proving to be more than just aesthetic appeal. Any messes or marks can be easily cleaned, and the M1 chip handles the occasional icing sugar without concern.
Final Thoughts
The 24-inch iMac is one of the most remarkable products to come from the M1 generation. It's tailored perfectly for Apple’s latest version of their all-in-one desktop. While some may find it puzzling, especially with larger models either delayed or on hold, the 24-inch iMac remains an excellent choice.
If you've hesitated to place your order, I encourage you to take the leap. The 24-inch screen is surprisingly spacious, and it performs exceptionally well regardless of your intended use. If you've been waiting, my experience might just motivate you to make that purchase.
And yes, I managed to resist the urge to title this piece "There’s an iMac in My Kitchen What Am I Gonna Do."
