Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins

In the world of journalism, being presentable is crucial, especially when you're in front of the camera. Faraz Javed, a new reporter at WXYZ-TV Channel 7, shares how his attention to his appearance has positively impacted viewer perception.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Faraz as part of our series titled "Five Essentials for a Flourishing Career in News Anchoring." With over 12 years of experience in broadcasting and a diverse skill set that includes producing award-winning shows and reporting on breaking news, Faraz brings a wealth of knowledge. Born in Dubai, he is not just passionate about his career; he also enjoys CrossFit and is on a journey to earn his private pilot license. Moreover, he aspires to launch a charitable foundation to assist those in need.

Thank you for joining us in this interview series, Faraz! Before we delve deeper, could you share a bit about your upbringing?

I grew up in Dubai, where my parents instilled the importance of striving to be our best selves. They emphasized the value of helping others and encouraged my sisters and me to engage socially. Their example taught me effective communication and the importance of learning from everyone I encounter. I take pride in my background and the values I carry from my family.

During my high school years, I struggled academically, which disappointed my parents. Teachers labeled me as an average student, which motivated me to prove them wrong. I dedicated myself to my studies, eventually excelling in my tests, and that commitment paved the way for my current success. Reflecting on my journey, I strive to inspire others by showing them that perseverance can lead to achievement, regardless of setbacks.

Section 1.1: Discovering My Path

Could you elaborate on what led you to pursue this career?

I graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2006 and started my career at MTV in New York City. I landed that job after relentlessly emailing HR with my resume and cover letter every day for three months. Eventually, they called and said, "If you stop emailing us, we will forward your resume to the hiring manager." Two weeks later, I secured an internship and climbed the ranks to become a producer.

After my time at MTV, I returned to Dubai to work at Dubai One, where I produced various shows and covered major events like the Oscars and Golden Globes, interviewing nearly 300 celebrities. My shift to journalism happened in 2014 when Dubai One downsized and focused on local news. One of the senior anchors encouraged me to report, and I embraced the opportunity, igniting my desire to break into the U.S. news market.

Last year, I connected with the management team at WXYZ, who recognized my potential and welcomed me aboard. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, especially in such a vibrant city like Detroit, where I've experienced a lot in just nine months.

Section 1.2: The Thrill of Journalism

Can you share the most fascinating experience you've had since starting your career?

Every day presents unique challenges and stories. My role at WXYZ embodies the idea that "life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get." I walk into the newsroom with a sense of excitement and responsibility, hoping to do justice to each story.

Choosing a single story is tough, but I find deep emotional resonance in covering individuals who have overcome significant obstacles to achieve their dreams. Their triumphs resonate with my own journey and motivate me to share their stories.

Chapter 2: Learning from Mistakes

What humorous blunders have you encountered as a new news presenter, and what lessons did you take away?

Being new to Michigan, I've had my share of mispronunciations with street and city names. One amusing moment was when I completely blanked on the name of the city and the interviewee while preparing for a live segment. Instead of panicking, I improvised and asked the interviewee to guide me through the story. This taught me to always have key details written down, and now I carry a small card with essential information to avoid such situations.

Section 2.1: Current Projects

What exciting projects are you currently working on?

At WXYZ, we have the opportunity to produce in-depth stories. While reporters typically have one to two minutes for their segments, we can extend that to three or four minutes for more complex narratives. I’m currently investigating the backlog in the Wayne County legal system and the rising issue of "sextortion" affecting teenage boys. These stories have the potential to create significant community impact, and I aim to share them in the coming weeks.

Section 2.2: Words of Wisdom

Given your success in a challenging field, what advice would you offer to aspiring journalists who fear failure?

Having worked in various roles across the media industry, my advice is to explore every avenue available. Don't hesitate to try different areas within media; you might discover unexpected passions. Regardless of your position, always give your best effort—your dedication can lead to opportunities you never anticipated.

Chapter 3: Acknowledging Support

Success is rarely achieved in isolation. Who has been instrumental in your journey, and why?

I owe much of my success to my family, who always believed in me. Their support has been invaluable. Additionally, I am grateful for my mentors at MTV, my news director, and my agent, all of whom recognized my potential and pushed me to excel. I also cherish the friendships that have supported my growth along the way.

Section 3.1: Preventing Burnout

What strategies do you recommend for fellow journalists to thrive without burning out?

Pre-planning has been key for me. I maintain a logbook for story ideas, capturing them whenever inspiration strikes. This practice helps me stay prepared for daily news meetings, ensuring I bring fresh ideas to the table, even under tight deadlines.

Chapter 4: Five Essentials for News Anchors

Based on your experience, what are the five key elements for a successful career as a news anchor?

  1. Presentation: Always look your best on camera. I've received compliments that have positively influenced viewer perceptions.
  2. Humility: Regardless of your achievements, remain humble and respectful. Acknowledging the experience of others fosters better relationships.
  3. Connection: Relatability is essential. Building rapport with your audience makes your stories resonate more deeply.
  4. Distinctiveness: Cultivate a trademark that sets you apart, whether it’s your storytelling style, personality, or fashion sense.
  5. Respect for Craft: Pursue journalism out of passion, not for fame or money. Loving what you do is crucial for longevity in this field.

Chapter 5: Trust in Media

In light of a Gallup poll indicating only 36% of Americans trust the mass media, what steps can news anchors take to rebuild that trust?

As journalists, it's essential to present facts without bias. At WXYZ, we prioritize fact-checking and strive to provide accurate information to our viewers. Engaging with the community also helps humanize journalists, making them more relatable and trustworthy.

Chapter 6: Life Lessons and Dreams

What is your favorite life lesson quote, and how has it influenced you?

"Never give up on your dreams." This mantra reminds me of the importance of having aspirations and believing in their attainability. Without dreams, life can feel monotonous and unfulfilling.

If you could inspire a movement, what would it be?

I would advocate for kindness. In an era marked by negativity, small acts of compassion can significantly impact our communities. By sharing positive stories, I hope to inspire a culture of empathy.

Is there someone you'd love to have a meal with, and why?

My mother. Living in Michigan, I miss her dearly and cherish our daily video calls. A meal with her would be filled with love and meaningful conversation.

How can our readers stay updated on your work?
