Rising Concerns Over Psilocin in Microdosing Gummies

Written on

Chapter 1: Overview of the Situation

Recent reports have highlighted a troubling trend involving a specific brand of recreational candies known as Diamond Shroomz. As of July 15, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has documented 69 cases of illness across 28 states in the U.S. linked to these products. Although the company asserts that their offerings contain no illegal substances, findings from the University of Virginia Health Toxicology Laboratory revealed the presence of psilocin, a psychoactive compound derived from "magic mushrooms," within their gummies. Although a recall has been initiated, not all retailers have removed these items from their shelves.

What led to this situation, and why is it critical to address?

Section 1.1: Understanding Microdosing

The controversial products in question are marketed for microdosing, which refers to the practice of consuming a small quantity of a substance to harness its benefits while minimizing adverse effects. This method is especially popular among users of psychedelics.

Microdosing research has particularly focused on psilocybin mushrooms as a potential treatment for PTSD and various mental health disorders, showing some promising results. However, psilocybin and its source mushrooms remain illegal in the U.S. outside of sanctioned research initiatives.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Nature of Psilocybin Mushrooms

Psilocybin mushrooms, also known as magic mushrooms

The mushrooms commonly referred to as "magic mushrooms" belong to the Psilocybe genus. When ingested, the psilocybin they contain is metabolized into psilocin by the body, resulting in effects akin to those produced by LSD. However, excessive consumption can lead to severe side effects, including seizures and nervous system depression. Microdosing is intended to avoid these negative outcomes, yet products containing mushrooms should not have these illegal chemicals.

Section 1.2: The Issue of Contamination

In the United States, dietary supplements face minimal regulation. While they are prohibited from containing illegal substances and must adhere to specific marketing guidelines, the responsibility for disclosing ingredients and ensuring safety largely falls on the manufacturers.

The supplement industry has a history of contamination issues, with some vitamins and "natural" products allegedly containing harmful heavy metals. Although many companies conduct safety tests to protect themselves legally and financially, hidden ingredients often slip through the cracks.

Chapter 2: The Diamond Shroomz Crisis

The recent wave of illnesses, which began in June and continued into July, primarily involved microdosing products such as chocolate bars, cones, and gummies. Symptoms reported included seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, agitation, abnormal heart rates, nausea, and vomiting. To date, 36 individuals have been hospitalized, and one death is currently under investigation for a potential link to these products.

Diamond Shroomz claims to have laboratory analysis documentation for all their offerings available on their website. Last year, ACR Labs in Florida tested some of their mushroom-containing chocolates and gummies and found only trace amounts of psilocybin and its metabolites. While that particular batch was deemed safe, it’s evident that other batches were not.

Questions arise regarding whether recent batches were tainted during production or if the issue lies with the starting materials. The company asserts that they used Amanita mushrooms for extraction, leaving the origin of the psilocin still unclear.

The problematic ingredient could be Amanita muscaria, known to induce illness in certain individuals. Although legal, this mushroom contains muscimol, a psychoactive and potentially hallucinogenic compound. Overconsumption can lead to toxicity, suggesting that contamination may indeed be the root of the problem.

The CDC and FDA continue to investigate these alarming developments.

In this video, health officials discuss the growing concerns regarding illnesses linked to mushroom chocolates and gummies, shedding light on the risks associated with these products.

This report highlights the serious health risks posed by mushroom gummies, featuring accounts from health officials addressing the sicknesses reported in Georgia.
