Chapter 1: Understanding Anxiety in Troubling Times

As the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus continues to spread, it poses significant challenges to both our health and economy. It would be unrealistic to suggest that anxiety should be dismissed entirely; it’s a natural response to the circumstances we find ourselves in. However, I can offer you a pathway through this anxiety. One of the most effective tools we possess is the Word of God. Taking time to meditate on Scripture can provide much-needed solace.

Meditation in the Context of Christianity

Many conservative Christians may hesitate to embrace meditation due to its association with Eastern mystical practices. The New Age movement has also contributed to a wariness of this spiritual discipline among Christians. However, meditation is simply about engaging deeply with a single thought or concept, and it is a practice rooted in the Bible. It need not be overly complex.

Figures such as Isaac (Gen. 24:63), Joshua (Josh. 1:8), and David (Psalm 77:12) all engaged in meditation. The Psalms frequently highlight the significance of this practice (Psalm 48:9; 77:12; 119:15, 23, 27, 48, 78, 97). Even Jesus withdrew to solitary places for communion with God (Luke 5:16), indicating that He taught His disciples the value of meditation, as seen with Peter (Acts 10:10; 11:5), Paul (2 Cor. 12:2), and John (Rev. 1:1).

Despite this biblical foundation, I acknowledge the confusion surrounding meditation practices. How can one ensure their meditation aligns with Christian beliefs?

Christian Meditation Defined

To ensure your meditation is firmly anchored in Scripture, focus on biblical texts. Meditating on Scripture is a reliable approach. Here are some recommendations for an effective meditation practice:

  1. Utilize the Psalms and Proverbs extensively.
  2. Concentrate on a brief passage of Scripture.
  3. If using a longer text, summarize its main ideas for meditation.
  4. Frame the Scripture as personal affirmations regarding your feelings or intentions.
  5. If the text speaks to God's actions, personalize it by reflecting on what God has done for you.
  6. Embrace repetition of these affirmations during your meditation; this method helps internalize the message.

Practicing Meditation for Strength

Here are three Scripture passages that have provided me with great strength and rejuvenation through consistent meditation. Feel free to adopt these or create your own meditations.

  1. My Devotion to God — Psalm 1

    Meditation: Lord, I strive to avoid the path of the wicked and refuse to align myself with those who mock. I commit to meditating on your Word day and night. Your Law is a treasure, guiding me like a tree planted by refreshing waters. May I flourish for Your Kingdom!

  2. God’s Unfailing Love — Psalm 139:1–14

    Meditation: Lord, You know me completely, from my thoughts to my actions. You crafted me in my mother’s womb and have never left my side. No matter where I go, Your presence surrounds me. I praise You for Your constant love and care!

  1. Conquering Fear and Adversity — Romans 8:31–39

    Meditation: Lord, with You by my side, who can harm me? You sacrificed your Son for me, demonstrating Your eternal love. I will not fear, nor will I retreat from challenges. Nothing can separate me from Your love—neither life nor death. Thank You for empowering me to overcome all obstacles!

I encourage you to dedicate ten minutes each morning and evening to meditate on God’s Word. This practice can significantly alleviate anxiety during these trying times.
