Chapter 1: Introduction to the Interview
Welcome to The Not Old Better Show! I’m Paul Vogelzang, and this marks episode #359. Today, we are part of the Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author Interview series, featuring Dr. G. Wayne Clough, a historian, celebrated author, and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
Chapter 2: A Journey Through Personal History
Dr. G. Wayne Clough will be featured at the Smithsonian Associates program on Thursday, June 20, 2019. He will be in conversation with Fredie Adelman, the Director of Smithsonian Associates, who will act as moderator.
Before we hear from Dr. Clough, I had the opportunity to speak with Fredie Adelman about Dr. Clough’s significant contributions to the Smithsonian and what sets him apart.
Dr. Clough, who was the first Southern-born secretary of the Smithsonian, developed a keen interest in how the institution’s vast collections could shed light on South Georgia, where he spent his childhood and where five generations of his family have lived. His quest, which began as a whimsical scavenger hunt, evolved into a profound exploration filled with surprising discoveries. Each artifact uncovered revealed stories about remarkable collectors, curators, and historical figures.
Section 2.1: Discoveries Unveiled
Clough's findings—including specimens of animals, plants, fossils, and cultural artifacts—offer a lens through which we can understand the significant changes that have occurred over the last 15,000 years, shaping what we see today. His personal history intertwines with that of fellow South Georgian President Jimmy Carter, represented in the collections through portraits, books, and even a solar panel.
Alongside Clough’s discoveries, his journey illustrates how the Smithsonian's collections, coupled with modern digital search tools, can illuminate personal histories.
The video titled "Minner Distinguished Lecture: G. Wayne Clough, Smithsonian Institution" features insights from Dr. Clough on his experiences and findings.
Subsection 2.1.1: A Conversation with Fredie Adelman
Join Dr. Clough as he engages in a dialogue with Frederica R. Adelman, linking his personal recollections to the treasures housed within the Smithsonian’s archives. Together, they explore the interconnectedness of family, community, and the natural world.
Section 2.2: Clough's New Book
Dr. Clough's new publication, Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey Through the Smithsonian Collection (UGA Press), is available for purchase and signing following his presentation at Smithsonian Associates on June 20, 2019.
His talk, titled "Things New and Strange: Secretary Clough Finds Personal Links in the Smithsonian’s Collections," draws from the themes explored in his book.
