Humanity's bond with technology is fundamentally woven into the fabric of our culture. Just like culture, which continually transforms and adapts, technology also evolves. This has been true since our ancestors first struck stones together to create tools, and it will persist as we continue to navigate our existence as a species.
Digital technology presents us with some of the most significant opportunities for advancement as a civilization, leading us down intriguing paths once reserved for science fiction and creative minds. However, we must also acknowledge that technology can pose grave threats to our species.
Having spent considerable time observing and experimenting with various groundbreaking and mundane technologies, we can now establish a set of foundational principles that govern their impact. But why is it crucial to identify these principles?
As I have mentioned previously, our society typically undergoes three critical stages of integrating technology into our cultural framework: Awareness, Evaluation, and Adaptation. This process determines the long-term success or failure of technology.
The fate of any technology does not rest solely on individual decisions; rather, it is a collective social endeavor. Technologies are inherently social entities. In today's capitalist framework, economists refer to this phenomenon as markets. Unfortunately, this viewpoint often overlooks the human experience, as many economists tend to dissociate human actions from economic exchanges—a rather peculiar stance. Fortunately, the field of behavioral economics has begun to bridge this gap.
Why Establish Technology Principles?
We have recognized for some time that certain technologies require guiding principles to enhance their utility for humanity. This is evident in the safety improvements seen in cars, airplanes, and boats, as well as the development of reliable medications and vaccines, which have replaced dubious remedies.
Many of these guiding principles are established through standards set by organizations like IEEE, ISO, and CE in Europe. A recent example is the EU's mandate for USB-C ports across all mobile devices, compelling companies like Apple to adopt this standard for their iPhones and iPads. This shift benefits both society and the environment. Similarly, standardized electrical sockets across nations have resulted in global advancements in technology. This illustrates a fascinating trend.
However, the principles I am proposing here are not merely standards; rather, they are considerations that technology creators and innovators might reflect on during their development processes. Some already do, implementing safeguards as they design their technologies—an approach currently being explored in the realm of Artificial Intelligence.
Chapter 2: Immutable Principles of Technology
So, what might we define as some foundational principles of technology, based on our current understanding? Here are some potential starting points:
- Not Neutral: No technology exists in a vacuum. We conceive and develop technologies to address specific challenges—whether minor, such as repairing a machine, or significant, like large-scale energy production. Unfortunately, some technologies are designed with harmful intentions. Acknowledging this duality is crucial. In philosophical and anthropological discourse, this is often referred to as axiological design, a concept championed by philosopher Sybren Heyndels.
- Unintended Consequences: Alexander Graham Bell envisioned the telephone as a means to share opera music, never foreseeing its role in fostering social connections. Similarly, Twitter originated as a tool for paramedics to communicate with emergency rooms, but its impact has been far more expansive. Predicting all unintended consequences is impossible, yet contemplating alternative applications can foster more socially responsible innovation.
- Compoundable: Digital technologies, in particular, exemplify the potential for combination, leading to enhanced outcomes. The smartphone, for instance, is a synthesis of various technologies, including GPS, cellular networks, software, batteries, and cameras. Creators may not initially recognize how their inventions can merge with others, often revealing benefits long after the fact.
- Culture as the Ultimate Arbiter: Ultimately, culture determines the acceptance of technology within society. The telephone, initially met with annoyance due to its disruptive sounds, became a valued tool due to its social utility. In contrast, the Segway, despite high expectations, failed to gain widespread traction. Culture's role in this dynamic is crucial; it evolves more rapidly than biological development and shapes our survival.
By acknowledging these principles as immutable laws of technology, we can better comprehend their implications, delve deeper into their nuances, and assess associated risks more swiftly. While this won't deter individuals with malicious intents, it will aid in fostering smarter innovation from a sociocultural perspective.

We can no longer afford to leave digital technology discussions solely to hard sciences, as the sociocultural impacts are profound and rapidly advancing.
