Cut Out the Excuses: Discovering Your Choices Beyond "I Need" and "I Have To"

Written on

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Necessity

We often hear phrases like, “Money isn’t significant,” or, “It doesn’t really matter,” and we recite them because society expects us to. But, if that’s the case, why aren’t we prioritizing what truly matters to us? Why don’t we allocate more time to what is genuinely important?

“I can’t afford it,” we claim. Yet, we cannot hold both beliefs—that money is insignificant and that it causes our problems. We cannot blame the world for our struggles if we engage with it in the same manner as everyone else.

“I wish I could help, but I don’t have time.” “I want to give, but my resources are limited.” Ultimately, it boils down to this: “I would, but I can’t.”

It seems there might be something other than God guiding your life. The pressing question is, what actions are you taking in response to this?

“I don’t have any options!” Really? Or is it that you simply dislike making decisions? Remember, even that is a decision, and every choice carries consequences.

When we cease making excuses and confront the uncomfortable truths, we discover a plethora of options available to us. Most individuals resist the notion of change, preferring the comfort of familiarity. They enjoy the idea of transformation but shy away from taking the necessary steps.

If you choose not to act, that’s one thing. However, don’t claim you are unable to do so.

Now, let’s focus on these two pivotal phrases: “I need” and “I have to.” Recognizing that these statements are often misleading can transform your life.

How frequently do you say these words? Start to observe their usage.

When you catch yourself using them, pause and question their validity. (For a real challenge, pay attention to others making these claims and ask them to reflect as well.)

Notice the patterns and document when and where they appear. Pay attention to how you respond to the question.

“I need” and “I have to.” Do you truly need them?

“Well, no, but…” “Not exactly, but…”

Yet, in these moments, you're making a choice. Acknowledging this can be difficult at first, but it also reveals that you have options.

Consider these statements: “I need a new outfit.” “I need a manicure.” “I need a hot date.” “I need a diet plan.” “I need a better car.” “I need a different job.” “I need a lot more money.”

Do you really need them? What if you don’t?

If something were essential, you would already possess it. If you lack it, it’s clear you can manage without it.

Let’s redefine “need.” Stop deceiving yourself.

“I have to impress others.” “I have to keep my family satisfied.” “I have to maintain appearances.” “I have to ensure my kids behave.” “I have to secure that promotion.” “I have to work this weekend.” “I have to prove my worth.”

Do you actually have to?

What if you chose not to?

If it were truly a necessity, you wouldn’t need to vocalize it. If you feel the need to persuade someone, deep down you already understand the truth.

Reassess the meaning of “have to.”

Stop the self-imposed pressure.

In reality, very few things are true necessities.

Next time you find yourself making those statements, pause and reflect. Recognizing these thought patterns can be the catalyst for change.

What if you refrained from doing what you’ve always done?

When in doubt… do nothing.

See what unfolds next.

It might be frightening. It might be exhilarating. However, repeating this process could fundamentally alter your life.

So, what comes next?

The choice is yours.

Want to know the one action you can take at any moment that will initiate transformation in every aspect of your life? Begin by being honest with God, yourself, and others.
