Unlocking Your Creative Potential: Embracing the Process

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Concept of Genius

Creativity flourishes when we allow it the opportunity to do so.

Embracing the creative journey

To reach new heights, we must invite the divine spirit to guide our journey.

For too long, we have mistakenly assumed full responsibility for our creative endeavors. This leads to feelings of despair whenever outcomes fall short of our expectations. Conversely, past achievements can haunt us with anxiety about whether we’ve peaked. If we view ourselves as the only source of creativity, this mindset proves unhelpful.

In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, creativity was attributed to a guiding force known as genius. They believed that rather than being a genius ourselves, we each possessed a genius. This perspective allows us to shift our focus from the results of our work to the creative process itself.

The Essence of Genius

In Roman culture, the term “genius” referred to a divine spirit linked to an individual, acting as a source of creativity and intellect. In modern times, however, when we create, we often feel solely responsible for the outcome, which can lead to distress.

How do we cope with the disappointment of a failed creation? Conversely, when we succeed, we might become overly proud, which doesn’t serve us well in the long term. This perception places the weight of responsibility on us to be the vessel for creative inspiration, a burden that can feel insurmountable.

Letting Your Genius Lead the Way

The notion of genius should not be taken literally; rather, it represents a method of creation that promotes sustainability. Instead of relying on an external force, I focus on building a reliable process. Creativity appears when given the opportunity. Daily commitment to the work is essential, and while some efforts may shine, many will not.

Regardless of the source of inspiration—be it my subconscious, a muse, or insights from others—I must be prepared to harness it. This approach allows me to concentrate on my contributions without obsessing over the final outcome.

The Importance of Showing Up

By consistently engaging in my work, I allow the genius to take the lead. The results are beyond my control, and I accept them as they come. If my work falls short, I analyze the situation to refine my approach.

By dismissing the idea of a divine force, I experience:

  • Reduced stress
  • Easier writing
  • Greater enjoyment

This is the essence of embracing the process.

The Creative Journey

Understanding that genius enables a focus on the journey rather than the end result alleviates stress. When we bear the burden of perfectionism, it becomes challenging to engage fully in our work. If we feel entirely responsible, the pressure to meet our own standards can hinder creativity.

Focusing solely on outcomes can obscure the joy that comes from creating. On the other hand, when we show up and let our inner genius guide us, we become more present, allowing us to appreciate the creative process. Overcoming obstacles and dedicating time to our passions makes the journey worthwhile.

The Joy of Creation

Cultivating a process that accommodates creativity is immensely fulfilling. Releasing the need for perfection liberates our creative spirit. By shifting away from outcome fixation, we begin to live our dreams. The act of creation fulfills our desire for meaning in life.

Moreover, this freedom encourages experimentation. When we are not burdened by the fear of failing, we gain invaluable experiences through trial and error, allowing us to personalize our creative process.

A process-oriented mindset emphasizes the joy of the entire journey, rather than solely the achievement of goals.

Summary

To conclude, our current perception of genius often leads to a focus on results, creating stress and stifling our creativity. By shifting the responsibility for outcomes to an external force, we alleviate the pressure, allowing for experimentation without the fear of harsh judgment.

To invite that divine force or guiding spirit into our work, we must consistently show up, refine our processes, and enjoy each moment along the way.

Let your genius play its role.
