Small Steps Lead to Success: The Power of Incremental Progress

Chapter 1: The Journey to Success
Success doesn't happen overnight; it's a gradual process that requires persistence.
Imagine standing at the summit of Mt. Everest, one of the highest peaks in the world. The feeling of achievement must be immense, knowing that fewer than 1% of people have reached this pinnacle. But did you arrive there in one giant leap? Certainly not. It took numerous small, determined steps to get there. The ascent is challenging, and at times, you might be tempted to quit, but what would be the story in that?
Much like climbing Mt. Everest, the pathway to success involves a series of small, cumulative actions. The journey isn't straightforward; as you make progress, you may face setbacks that require you to start over multiple times. There are no shortcuts or alternative routes to accelerate your success, and your journey will be distinct from anyone else's.
So, what is the key to achieving your goals? It's simple: never give up, no matter how tough the journey becomes.
Ingredients for Success
Just like baking a cake, achieving success requires the right components. While there are many factors that can contribute to your success, let’s focus on three critical elements that are entirely within your control:
- Dedication
- A Strategic Plan
- Commitment to Your Plan
Each of these components plays a vital role in helping you scale the heights of your chosen success.
Dedication
Dedication is all about the effort you're willing to put in. How much do you desire to reach your goals? What sacrifices are you prepared to make? Only your work ethic can provide these answers.
When I embarked on my journey of playing basketball internationally, I committed to training rigorously, often working out alone at 2 AM. To join a five-on-five game, I would travel an hour and a half from home. Additionally, I maintained a demanding schedule, working in a warehouse and driving for Uber up to 60 hours a week to save funds for my basketball aspirations in Spain. This level of commitment meant sacrificing time for leisure activities such as partying, traveling, and socializing with friends.
When you have a clear vision of your goals, you'll find that nothing can stand in your way. Just like I did, you'll be willing to invest the necessary effort to turn your dreams into reality. Your dedication is the foundation for claiming your aspirations.
Strategic Plan
While hard work is essential, having a roadmap or a plan is crucial for reaching the peak of your "Mt. Everest." Without a clear target, you'll struggle to hit your goals. Understandably, your plan will evolve as you advance. It serves as a framework to ensure that you're working intelligently, not just tirelessly.
How do you go about formulating this plan? How can you be sure it aligns with your aspirations? Unfortunately, these questions don't have straightforward answers.
From my experience, I've found that clarity often arises after encountering setbacks. This perspective goes against the conventional wisdom that insists on achieving everything perfectly. The idea of a flawless career, ideal relationships, and perfect family life is misleading.
I faced numerous job changes before realizing my true career aspirations. I lost friends along the way, which helped clarify what I wanted from my friendships. Through various relationships, I learned what I truly desired in a partner.
To discover what's right for you, you may need to first understand what's wrong. So, embrace the chaos of life! Accept that job, date that person, and explore the world.
Your plan will become clearer as you venture forth, as exploration fosters self-reflection. You can’t learn about yourself without something to examine.
Commitment to Your Plan
Once you've established your plan, the next step is to stick to it. Following through on your commitments is essential. It teaches you valuable lessons about yourself. Failing to follow through can lead to a cycle of negativity and harmful self-talk, ultimately causing you to lose your sense of identity.
How can you avoid falling into this cycle?
Engage in the activities you know you should be doing. Trust your instincts; if you find yourself not following through, it may indicate that you're living a life shaped by others’ expectations rather than your own desires. Don't chastise yourself for this; I've been there too.
I realized that my life had been tailored for everyone except me. The moment I began pursuing my genuine interests was when I started to truly follow through.
Do you find yourself losing track of time when you're engaged in something meaningful? Are you surrounded by people who uplift you rather than drain your energy? Are you mindful of your habits and how well you care for yourself?
Reflecting on these questions can help you create a blueprint for increased commitment in your life. This follow-through generates momentum, propelling you toward the top of your own Mt. Everest.
Remember, every great journey begins with small steps. Let your dedication, strategic planning, and commitment be the driving forces that lead you from your first effort to your final accomplishment.
