# Reimagining Your Resume for the Age of Chatbots

Chapter 1: The Impact of Chatbots on Recruitment
In today's landscape, large language models and chatbots present a fascinating challenge for both recruiters and job seekers.
Imagine you’re a recruiter at an innovative startup in 2030. After browsing through numerous resumes, you believe you’ve found an outstanding candidate. Before reaching out, you decide to gather more information using ChatGPT. "What can you tell me about John Haglund? He’s currently employed at Accenture and studied at Columbia University."
The chatbot, utilizing a vast dataset, pauses before responding, "Based on publicly available information, John Haglund holds the position of Senior Manager at Accenture, boasting over 20 years with the firm. He operates out of New York City and specializes in technology consulting, program management, and business development."
These inaccuracies (I’ve worked far less than 20 years) stem from a recent search of my name on ChatGPT. However, this situation hints at a future where chatbots could become the go-to source for background checks. By piecing together fragmented data available online, large language models might craft an overview of individuals without their consent.
So, how can candidates effectively present themselves in this chatbot-dominated environment? What strategies can they use to create a professional profile that reflects their desired online persona? It all begins with maintaining digital hygiene. Here are three essential steps to transform your resume for the chatbot era.
Step 1: Conduct a Personal Audit
It’s common knowledge that your online activities are publicly accessible. However, the internet often feels elusive; information can be buried so deep that few would bother to dig it out. But large language models don't stop at the first page of Google results.
Cleaning up your profile will require significant effort. I suggest starting with searches of your name and profession on major search engines and emerging chatbots. Compile a list of findings, categorizing them into inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and details you prefer to keep private.
A journalist friend of mine recently discovered their personal data listed on a site called RocketReach without their consent. They promptly contacted the platform to request its removal.
Step 2: Make Targeted Requests for Correction
Next comes the challenge of restoring your reputation. While completely erasing your online footprint may be impossible, a focused approach can yield better results. After your audit, identify the most glaring inaccuracies and omissions.
The New York Times offers a helpful guide for cleansing your digital presence. Given that many large language models will scan the web, it may take time for chatbots to stop reflecting outdated information. Some may even incorporate safeguards to protect user data.
What about positive achievements that aren't appearing in searches? Unfortunately, you can't simply instruct a large language model to highlight your latest accomplishments. Instead, analyze the content that appears and adjust your information to ensure it stands out in the right contexts.
Step 3: Establish a Regular Check-Up Routine
Finally, it's vital to cultivate good habits. I often find myself updating my public profiles on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram. My New Year’s resolution often involves taking a break from these tasks, but remember that your online presence will evolve, whether you want it to or not.
I recommend routinely searching for yourself on ChatGPT and other chatbot tools to monitor how your profile is represented. Consider saving specific search terms for easy access in the future. Hopefully, there will be an alert system similar to email notifications that keeps you updated about your online presence.
Who knows what the bots might be up to? It’s wise to stay vigilant.
In recent developments, reporters and researchers have explored the new AI-powered Bing search engine from Microsoft, praising its remarkable ability to provide human-like responses to queries, such as creating the perfect grocery list, while also expressing concerns about its overly human-like responses.
For the majority of my adult life, the structure of the internet has remained fairly consistent. I’ve always typed a question into a search engine and sifted through a plethora of links to find answers. For example, if I were searching for a chili recipe, I’d typically scroll through numerous advertisements before locating the actual recipe.
It's thrilling to witness a potential shift in how we interact with the internet. With the advent of large language models and chatbots, the way we access information is set to change dramatically. While concerns about AI’s writing capabilities and its potential for sentience are valid, numerous everyday tasks will undergo significant transformations. Information, whether accurate or not, will become much more accessible.
When recruiters look for my profile in 2030, I can only hope that chatbots will favorably present my most successful Medium articles.
