Minimalism as a Feminist Perspective: Addressing Women's Stress

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Minimalism's Impact on Women

Each time I tune into The Minimalists' podcasts, I am often struck by the number of female callers. This led me to investigate how minimalism might influence women differently from men. The findings are surprising, revealing a significant disparity that doesn't favor women.

Although the contemporary minimalism movement is often associated with male figures like The Minimalists, Joshua Becker, and Cal Newport, it is women who stand to gain more from its principles.

Is clutter a source of stress for you? Research shows that excess items elevate cortisol levels, the stress hormone. An overload of belongings in our spaces can lead to issues such as weight gain, procrastination, sleeplessness, and depression. Interestingly, studies indicate that women tend to exhibit higher cortisol levels compared to men. The conclusion? An accumulation of possessions correlates with increased stress for women, while men appear less affected by disorganization.

One amusing illustration of this dynamic is the viral YouTube sketch about a "magic coffee table." In this comedic portrayal, anything left on this table mysteriously disappears overnight. However, it’s revealed that the magic is actually the result of a woman managing the household. Historically, in many traditional relationships, which gender has been tasked with maintaining cleanliness? Typically, it has been women who are conditioned to handle these responsibilities.

It's worth noting that societal norms are evolving, with many Millennial couples sharing household duties. Yet, for every home where responsibilities are equally divided, countless others still expect women to manage most of the chores. Currently, only about 9% of men take on the majority of household tasks.

Given these dynamics, it's understandable why women may be drawn to the principles of minimalism.

The Gendered Nature of Consumerism

Forbes asserts, “If the consumer economy had a sex, it would be female.” Women account for 70%-80% of all consumer spending. This isn't simply due to an obsession with shopping; rather, women often act as the primary decision-makers for household purchases. As caregivers for children and elderly family members, women are responsible for spending on behalf of their households.

Consequently, marketing strategies are frequently tailored to target women, making the pursuit of minimalism both more relevant and, paradoxically, more challenging for them.

It’s no wonder that I often hear women’s perspectives on minimalist podcasts and in discussions about simple living. The pressure from consumerism, combined with the unique stressors women face regarding material possessions, creates a complex challenge.

Critiques of Minimalism and Their Implications for Women

Critics sometimes liken minimalism to an eating disorder, suggesting that it’s merely a shift in focus from accumulation to elimination. They argue that both materialists and minimalists are fixated on "stuff."

While it is true that minimalism encompasses more than just decluttering, dismissing the significance of possessions overlooks a critical source of stress for women. Since women are primarily responsible for household purchases, the challenge of managing excess belongings can lead to significant emotional burden.

Empowering Women Through Minimalism

The core of my argument is that minimalism resonates deeply with women because it focuses on the home—an area where women traditionally have exerted the most effort. The less time spent managing clutter, the more time available for other pursuits.

Most women do not wish to be tethered to a chaotic environment. We aspire to engage in work, pursue hobbies, and, importantly, carve out time for ourselves. Minimalism could be a crucial part of achieving that balance.

Historically, the advent of household appliances revolutionized domestic life for women, and I believe that minimalism could represent a similar transformation. I witnessed my mother dedicate decades to cleaning up after my father. The burden of managing a cluttered home was overwhelming.

In contrast, living minimally allows both my partner and me to spend little time on household tasks. Even if the responsibility fell solely on me as a woman, maintaining order requires minimal effort. This prospect is genuinely appealing.

In conclusion, minimalism is a feminist issue, and I find gratitude in the movement every day.
