Manifesting Your Goals: Science or Superstition? Unpacking the Truth

Written on

Understanding Manifestation in Leadership

In the realm of management and leadership, the emphasis is often on setting targets, key performance indicators, and achieving results. This is a philosophy I fully support. I prioritize documenting objectives, defining what success entails, and diligently pursuing those goals, much like a dedicated worker bee. I encourage my team to adopt a similar mindset and assist fellow leaders with their performance evaluations—a task that many managers seem to dread.

Yet, there are moments when I indulge in a bit of "woo-woo," tossing a goal out into the universe, hoping that some celestial entity will take notice and fulfill my wish. This imagined goddess typically resembles a fierce Celtic warrior with vibrant red curls, complete with a shield and armor—a blend of Sorsha from Willow, Boudica, and Xena.

Instead of dismissing such thoughts with "this isn’t me," I prefer to view them as "this isn’t me, yet."

But let's return to the concept of manifestation. The personal goals I often cast into the universe are usually quite intimate, like wishing for a partner or seeking financial growth. However, I can't recall ever asking the universe to "please secure the budget for the leadership program" or "convince the Operations Manager to finalize the objectives for my course." I doubt the goddess would find those requests compelling.

So, does this whimsical notion of manifestation actually yield results, or is it merely a psychological placebo?

Fortunately, Mel Robbins sheds light on this topic, and her insights, shared in a recent podcast episode, are enlightening.

The Science of Manifestation: Four Essential Steps

Robbins presents a scientifically-backed approach to manifestation, which can be summarized in four key steps:

Step One: Embrace Honesty

To effectively manifest your goals, you must first be truthful with yourself. Do you aspire to be a size 6, run a multi-million-dollar enterprise, and travel extensively? Or would you prefer to pursue less demanding objectives?

Leo Tolstoy aptly stated, “If you cannot be honest with yourself, there is no hope of being honest with anyone else.” If you aren't truthful about your desires, the part of your mind responsible for achieving goals will recognize the disconnect, hindering your success.

Action Points:

  • Be brutally honest about your goals.
  • Write down your objectives in detail.

Step Two: Visualize the Journey

Robbins highlights a common pitfall in goal-setting: focusing solely on the end result, such as running a marathon or authoring a book. This grand vision can be overwhelming for our minds. Instead, concentrate on visualizing the incremental steps you need to take—like lacing up your running shoes or writing 1,000 words.

Visualizing small victories makes your goals feel more attainable and keeps you motivated. Additionally, prepare for the challenges you'll face along the way; consider the discomfort and frustration that may arise from repetitive tasks.

Action Points:

  • Break down your goal into manageable steps.
  • Include the tedious aspects of the journey.
  • Visualize both the small achievements and the challenges.

Step Three: Overcome Imposter Syndrome

It's essential to combat imposter syndrome. When trying something new, it's crucial to remember that you’re a novice for a reason—you haven't done it yet. Instead of saying, "This isn’t me," reframe it to "This isn’t me, yet."

The more you practice and visualize the smaller steps, the quicker your goal will become a part of your routine. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, so be kind to yourself and acknowledge your progress, no matter how small.

Action Points:

  • Remind yourself that expertise comes with experience.
  • Treat yourself with kindness.
  • Avoid comparing yourself to those already proficient.

Step Four: Persist Relentlessly

Many individuals give up just before they reach their goals, often due to unrealistic expectations for rapid results. Don’t fall for the myth of overnight success. Many creators and writers I admire have labored for years before seeing financial rewards, and true overnight successes often have a decade of hard work behind them.

Action Points:

  • Maintain your resolve and never give up.
  • Keep pushing forward.

Conclusion: The Path to Achievement

If you're eager to accomplish your aspirations and enjoy a bit of visualization, consider manifesting as a viable approach. Research supports its effectiveness. Remember the four fundamental steps:

  1. Be honest about your goals and document them.
  2. Visualize the steps needed to reach your objectives, celebrating small wins.
  3. Confront imposter syndrome by recognizing your status as a beginner and embracing mistakes.
  4. Stay persistent—success often requires enduring effort.
