However, the S2X's ability to capture wind from any direction eliminates the need for expensive orientation equipment. Its generator can be positioned at water level, making maintenance straightforward and cost-effective. These factors contribute to a projected energy cost of only $50 per MWh for the S2X, making offshore wind a more competitive energy option.

Despite the promising design, developing and deploying these turbines is not as simple as it appears. Extensive prototyping and sea trials are essential to refine the design and ensure safety, especially in extreme weather conditions like hurricanes.

SeaTwirl has completed a prototype run with the S1 model, validating the concept's viability. However, they must conduct a full-scale assessment before the turbines can be manufactured. Initially, they planned to test a 1 MW S2X in a Norwegian fish farm for five years. Unfortunately, this plan faced delays due to appeals from various organizations, including fishing groups and environmental advocates.

Fortunately, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate dismissed these appeals, granting SeaTwirl the necessary license to proceed with testing. This decision paves the way for the S2X to enter the development phase.

Building the first full-scale S2X will take time, and it must undergo rigorous testing for five years. Following this, SeaTwirl will need to ramp up manufacturing to fulfill this 1 MW order and any additional requests. It may take nearly a decade before the S2X is available on a larger scale, but its eventual arrival could significantly impact the wind energy market.
