Healing Past Wounds: Letting Go of Resentment and Living Now
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Resentment
Typically, my boxing class energizes me, but unexpectedly, I found myself feeling a surge of resentment towards my instructor.
My inner rebellious teen seemed to take control…
Why is she directing me?
What am I even doing here?
Can’t she just let me be?
After a few days of grappling with these feelings, I took time to reflect on them. No one was forcing me to be there; in fact, I was spending a considerable amount for the chance to participate.
So what was fueling this resentment?
The realization hit me hard and fast: it stemmed from my first job in sales, where my boss was harsh, unforgiving, and never satisfied.
I constantly felt inadequate, burdened by a sense of failure.
Every day felt suffocating.
Now, years later, I was projecting all of those past frustrations onto my boxing teacher.
When the Past Invades the Present
We all carry burdens from our past that influence our current actions.
Often, when emotions flare up in a specific situation, they may not relate to that moment at all but instead echo unresolved issues from earlier in our lives.
True growth occurs when we approach these “negative” feelings with compassion and allow them space in our lives.
When difficult emotions such as sadness, resentment, or anger arise, we can choose to welcome them in.
Consider these feelings as weary travelers who have been navigating our subconscious for ages.
We can invite them in, perhaps even offering them a comforting drink.
“Hello resentment, you seem like you’ve endured quite the journey. Share your story with me.”
Many shy away from welcoming these guests out of fear. They see the weariness etched on their faces and worry they might disrupt their serene environment.
However, those who summon the courage to open their doors find themselves rewarded with resilience and insight.
Do not let fear dictate your actions, nor allow your past to dominate your present by keeping it hidden away.
Have faith that when your history resurfaces, you possess the strength to confront it.
Trust the journey.
And trust in yourself.
Keep inspiring,
Nicole
