When Di was only 12 years old, her parents' divorce led to a court decision placing her in her father's custody. Her mother, opting for a new life with an online partner, candidly told the court she no longer wished to bear the responsibilities of family life. Left to navigate parenting alone, Di's father never truly recovered from his wife's departure for a younger man. He grew resentful towards women and his own existence, viewing Di as a painful reminder of his failed marriage. Over time, he spiraled into alcoholism, consuming as many as 16 beers daily by the time Di turned 13. Eventually, he lost his job and became dependent on welfare.

Although his paternal affection was always lacking, his behavior worsened, leading to increased physical aggression. Initially, he subjected Di to verbal abuse, often making derogatory comparisons to her mother. This soon escalated into physical violence, particularly during his bouts of intoxication.

By age 14, Di had suffered immensely, both emotionally and physically. Years of verbal torment had severely damaged her self-worth. She developed a serious eating disorder and dropped out of school, with her father oblivious to her suffering. During his drunken rages, he would physically assault her, channeling his frustrations onto her.
