The Future of Writing in an Age of AI: Embracing ChatGPT

Written on

Chapter 1: ChatGPT and the Writing Landscape

In recent weeks, my social media feeds have been flooded with what I’ve termed "ChatGPT anxiety." This significant advancement in AI technology, capable of responding to queries with impressively coherent and seemingly precise language, has unsettled writers and educators alike.

As a high school English teacher, I can't help but question whether teaching writing is still relevant. For years, I’ve supported sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds as they struggled to articulate their thoughts on paper or screens. Now, with just a few verbal prompts, an AI chatbot can seemingly do the heavy lifting for them. Does this signal the end of my role as an educator?

A thought crossed my mind: did math teachers feel similarly with the introduction of calculators? Why would anyone memorize equations when a calculator can perform the task effortlessly?

I’ve spent considerable time reflecting on this technological leap and its implications for society, for humanity's future, and for my own career. As someone who generally approaches life with optimism, I’ve managed to find joy in my three decades spent in high school classrooms. I still believe that writing and its instruction have a vital place in today’s world.

That said, ChatGPT does evoke concerns about a future where writing—and, by extension, critical thinking—could become obsolete.

Writing is often a challenging endeavor that requires contemplation, planning, revision, and time. Humans naturally shy away from hard work when possible, a tendency that’s particularly evident among high school students. However, many individuals—including students—are willing to put in the effort when they find joy in the task.

This brings me to a critical question: Will people abandon writing altogether? I don't think so. Crafting something meaningful, something that resonates with the writer, is inherently rewarding.

Consider this analogy: self-driving cars have become a hot topic lately. However, I doubt that the rise of autonomous vehicles means we will stop teaching people how to drive. For some, driving offers a sense of empowerment that’s hard to replicate. While self-driving cars may appeal to others, I believe there’s space for both driving and automation—for now, at least.

I suspect that ChatGPT and similar AI tools will serve as instruments to enhance creativity rather than replace human imagination. Currently, while the output of ChatGPT may impress the untrained observer, those of us who are writers recognize that the content often lacks depth and personality. It's akin to admiring a picture of brownies on a box mix instead of savoring the real thing—the aroma of chocolate and the joy of tasting a warm, gooey brownie cannot be replicated.

Chapter 2: Cooking, Creativity, and ChatGPT

To extend the cooking analogy, consider dining out versus home cooking. I’ve reached a point where I can afford to eat out or buy pre-made meals. Still, I enjoy cooking, even if I don’t do it for every meal. The sensory experience—the aroma of herbs and cheese bubbling in the oven—provides a satisfaction that take-out can't replicate.

I believe that ChatGPT won’t spell the end for human writing or the teaching of it, much like take-out hasn't eliminated the need for grocery stores or home-cooked meals. Ultimately, my role as a high school teacher is to nurture students' abilities to think critically and articulate their ideas clearly. While the methods of expression may evolve, the demand for clear communication and critical thought has never been more crucial.

We’ve known for years that computer programs can create music, but has that diminished our appreciation for songwriters and composers? AI can generate recipes, but does that mean we no longer need chefs? Human beings possess an innate urge to create, and I don’t foresee ChatGPT dampening our desire for quality literature, engaging theater, or impactful speeches.

Now that this tool is available, let’s explore how to utilize it to tackle mundane writing tasks, freeing up our minds and spirits to craft more meaningful work—writing that can inspire a more just and ethical future.

ChatGPT lacks the ability to perceive an audience, even if it can be programmed to do so. The creations it produces lack the emotional depth that comes from human thought and experience. The true magic unfolds when ideas simmer in a person’s mind, ready to be expressed.

While science, automation, and technology are remarkable and efficient, they cannot replicate the unique spark of human creativity. Therefore, I firmly believe that ChatGPT and other AI advancements will not replace the necessity for English educators or professional writers. Instead, they may challenge us to adapt and innovate.

As long as there are individuals—both young and old—seeking to understand themselves and the world around them, the need to engage with great writers of both the past and present will endure. There will always be a demand for authentic expression, one that isn’t merely generated by algorithms but resonates deeply with the human experience.
