Funny Autocorrect Fails: The Importance of Proofreading

Written on

Chapter 1: The Comedy of Texting Errors

This morning, I stumbled upon a humorous complaint on social media regarding the pothole issues in our town. The post humorously stated, “While driving, my daughter hit a big hole because of oncoming traffic and pooped a large hole in her new tire…” The mental image had me in stitches!

A couple of years back, a teenager from our church youth group sent me a text that read, “I’m doing meth in the dark.” My immediate reply was, “Just say no…” Clearly, she meant math, and the power was out at school.

Today, I had my own autocorrect blunder. My wife called to let me know that water was leaking around our chimney and dripping from the kitchen ceiling. I texted a friend who is reliable with home repairs, but in my haste, I failed to proofread. The message I sent read, “There’s a link coming in around himself again…”

He rang me a few minutes later, chuckling. “What is a link around himself, and why is it happening again?” he queried.

I'm sure many of us have sent or received baffling texts due to autocorrect. While it can be helpful in sending messages, it can also lead to confusion and embarrassment. At times, it inserts words we never intended to use.

Words are significant.

The Bible emphasizes the weight of our words. Proverbs 18:21 states, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Our speech can either uplift or devastate (Proverbs 12:6). Jesus warned us, “And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you” (Matthew 12:36–37, NLT). So, before you send that next text, take a moment to proofread. Otherwise, you may find yourself the target of some light-hearted teasing.

On a more serious note, as you prepare for your next conversation, consider the potential impact of your words. Remember, they carry the “power of life and death.”
