Exploring the Depths of Life: Beyond the Rat Race

Chapter 1: Life's Purpose in Perspective
Have you ever pondered the question, "Is this all there is to life?" I vividly recall grappling with this thought while attending a financial advisor conference, where a slide was displayed that captured my attention.
This particular slide, produced by the OECD, illustrated the average retirement duration for men and women across different nations. Essentially, the length of one’s retirement can be calculated by subtracting the retirement age from the average life expectancy.
In Canada, for example, women have a life expectancy of around 87 years, while men average about 80 years. With a retirement age set at 65, women typically enjoy approximately 21 years of retirement, whereas men have about 15 years. However, a significant portion of this time—roughly a decade—is spent in good health. Many individuals find that after reaching their 80s, their activity levels decline. Thus, it becomes apparent that we may spend 45 years working, but only 10 years actively relishing the benefits of our labor.
This realization struck me hard: people work for 45 years, retire, and then might only live for another 20 years! What happens if we don't live to 87? I even remembered a client who tragically passed away from lymphoma just after retiring.
The Question Lingers
The first thought that crossed my mind, which I voiced during the conference, was, “Is this really all there is?”
The speaker emphasized the importance of financial advisors encouraging clients to save diligently (a suggestion that often masked the underlying motive of increasing our own earnings). However, I felt a disconnect; it seemed tragic that we dedicate so much of our lives to accumulating wealth, only to spend the twilight years doing little of significance.
As the conference concluded, I shared my thoughts with a colleague. Her response was, “So, are you considering quitting to lounge on a beach?” I responded with conviction, “Absolutely!”
Chapter 2: Finding Meaning Beyond Work
Less than a year later, I found myself in the Mediterranean, teaching others the importance of pursuing meaningful work if they intend to spend the majority of their lives in labor. What steps are you taking to ensure that you are making the most of your life?
The first video, "Peggy Lee -- Is That All There Is? 1969," explores themes of existential questioning and the search for deeper meaning in life.
The second video, "Is That All There Is?" delves into similar reflections on life’s purpose and fulfillment.
