The field of theology can be likened to an experimental science, as noted by C.S. Lewis. While it shares similarities with other experimental disciplines, it is not entirely the same. In traditional sciences, such as geology, the researcher must actively seek out their subjects—rocks, for instance—because they will not present themselves spontaneously. In contrast, when it comes to studying living creatures, such as animals in the wild, there’s a level of initiative on their part since they can choose to flee.

When analyzing human beings, the dynamic shifts again; if a person is unwilling to share themselves, one can hardly gain insight into their character. Here, the responsibility falls on both parties. However, in the realm of theology, the initiative rests solely with God. If He does not reveal Himself, no human endeavor can uncover His presence. Lewis notes that God might reveal more of Himself to some individuals than to others, not due to favoritism, but because one's mindset and character might not be conducive to receiving such revelations. He illustrates this by stating, “Just as sunlight, though it has no favourites, cannot be reflected in a dusty mirror as clearly as in a clean one.”

Section 1.1: Tools for Understanding God

In the sciences, researchers utilize various instruments, such as microscopes and telescopes, to enhance their understanding. However, the primary instrument for perceiving God is the individual themselves. Like any tool, it needs to be maintained; otherwise, one's vision of God becomes obscured, akin to observing the Moon through a smudged telescope. Lewis asserts that “God can show Himself as He really is only to real men,” referring to individuals who not only strive for personal goodness but also foster unity and love within a community. This interconnectedness is essential, as it reflects the divine intention for humanity—to function as a cohesive body, similar to musicians in an orchestra or organs within a single body. Thus, the most effective instrument for learning about God is the entire Christian community.

Simplifying the complexities of theology is often a futile endeavor. Lewis observes that individuals who attempt to replace the rich tradition of Christianity with their own simplified interpretations are essentially wasting their time. They can be intelligent, possibly even more so than some established theologians, yet they deprive themselves of meaningful engagement with the true essence of their subject. In two years, they may fade into obscurity while genuine theological exploration continues to thrive.
