# Evening Activities to Boost Productivity and Happiness

Evening Alternatives to Screen Time

If you find yourself spending excessive hours binge-watching shows or scrolling through online content, you're not alone. A 2021 report from the UK revealed that adults dedicate roughly one-third of their waking hours to television and online streaming, averaging around five hours and forty minutes daily.

However, you don’t need to give up your TV entirely or adopt an overly complex evening routine. What you require is a toolkit of alternative activities that pique your interest, allowing for a dynamic and enjoyable evening experience. By selecting a few options to replace some of your screen time, you can experiment and adapt your choices over time. This way, you'll discover what truly revitalizes your energy, enhances your mental clarity, and strengthens your relationships, leading to a peaceful night’s sleep with a happy heart.

10 Things to Do in the Evening Instead of Watching Netflix - YouTube

Discover creative and fulfilling alternatives to watching TV that can enrich your evenings and boost your well-being.

Manage Tomorrow's Distractions

Rather than battling daily distractions, take proactive steps to manage them. Spend a few minutes each night setting up for the next day by decluttering your workspace, organizing your materials, or even planning your schedule. Leaving your phone outside the bedroom can help minimize evening distractions, making it easier to concentrate come morning.

Clear Your Mind of Unfinished Thoughts

As David Allen states, "Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them." It’s common to keep unresolved matters weighing heavily on our minds. Consider jotting down a to-do list, scheduling appointments, or performing a quick brain dump in the evening. This practice helps prevent lingering concerns from overshadowing your thoughts the next day. Chris Bailey emphasizes in his book Hyperfocus that "An empty brain is a productive brain," underscoring the importance of mental clarity.

Avoid Mental Junk Food

Reality TV, gossip shows, and superficial content can be likened to junk food for your mind—low-quality, heavily processed, and often consumed despite knowing it’s not beneficial. A few years back, I made the decision to cut out what author Paul Greenberg refers to as 'junk media.' Instead, I turned to quality films, documentaries, and thoughtful creators on YouTube. Choosing enriching content leaves my mind in a far better state than indulging in low-quality media.

Limit Mindless Distractions

Evenings are often not as restful as they should be. After a long day, we tend to fill our time with social media, news updates, or television. This behavior distracts rather than relaxes our minds, bombarding us with more information and stimulation. While it’s unrealistic to eliminate all devices from your evening, it’s crucial to balance low-quality leisure with more enriching activities. Aim for an evening that enhances your mental clarity and energy.

Introduce Game Nights

If your family tends to retreat to their individual spaces after dinner, consider establishing a weekly board game night. Digital detox expert Tanya Gooding suggests that engaging in board games induces a flow state—a meditative experience where your brain can rejuvenate. This state not only slows your heart rate but also releases feel-good chemicals, making for a joyful way to spend an evening together.

Engage in Meaningful Conversations

Research indicates that while texting may create a false sense of closeness, it can actually diminish relationship satisfaction and stability. Reserve texting for logistical matters and save deeper conversations for phone calls or in-person discussions.

Read for Pleasure

Studies show that reading fiction can significantly reduce stress, with levels dropping by up to 68% after indulging in a good book—more so than listening to music or drinking tea. Many view reading as a tool for productivity or acquiring knowledge, but as bestselling author Matt Haig poignantly states, "Reading isn't important because it helps to get you a job. It's important because it gives you room to exist beyond the reality you're given." Currently, I'm re-reading the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.

Practice Patience with Communication

With platforms like WhatsApp and Messenger making communication instant and effortless, we’ve developed an unhealthy expectation of constant availability. It's important to reclaim control over your time and communications. If your friends truly care, they’ll respect your need for space. If not, they may not be worth your attention.

Create a Sleep-Conducive Environment

Each room in your home serves a distinct purpose. Kitchens are for cooking, dining rooms for meals, offices for work, living rooms for socializing, and bedrooms for rest. By utilizing spaces according to their intended purposes, you can enhance productivity. Keep your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep and intimacy by removing work-related items, laptops, and televisions.

Daily Reflection

A cherished birthday gift from last year is my One Line a Day journal. Instead of a complex journaling routine, writing just a single line each day feels attainable. It’s a wonderful way to capture a final thought before bedtime and focus on the small joys of life.

I hope at least one of these suggestions motivates you to reduce screen time and invest more in your relationships, relaxation, and focus. Thank you for reading, and remember—always stay kind! :)
