Embracing the Absurd: Philosophies to Alleviate Fear of Death
Written on
Understanding the Nature of Death
Instead of dreading death, we can acknowledge its inevitability and lead a fulfilling life. The mere mention of death often brings discomfort; however, unlike the fear of a dark entity, confronting our mortality poses no real threat. A multitude of philosophies can aid us in recognizing this truth.
Exploring Philosophical Insights
Philosophies such as Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Absurdism provide valuable perspectives that warrant our attention.
Let’s Concentrate on What We Can Control
“There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.” – Epictetus
This wisdom is widely acknowledged, yet it holds true. Worrying about external factors (like death) can lead to unnecessary frustration. By maintaining awareness of our actions and reactions, we can cultivate a sense of happiness. Since we cannot dictate the timing of our own demise, why burden ourselves with concern over something beyond our influence?
The Reality of Death
“Death does not concern us, because as long as we exist, death is not here. And once it does come, we no longer exist.” – Epicurus
This quote transformed my outlook when I encountered it in my philosophy class during high school. What was I so fearful of? In truth, I will encounter more ghosts in my life than I will face my own death. Death should not be viewed as a formidable adversary since we will never actually confront it.
Concerns for Loved Ones
I understand the pain of losing a loved one. It’s natural to worry about what may happen to those dear to us when our time comes. However, the reality is less daunting than it appears. People pass away every day, and life continues to unfold. Yes, we are indeed small in the grand scheme of things. Yet, it’s essential to navigate this absurd existence with a positive mindset.
Embracing Absurdism
“The literal meaning of life is whatever you’re doing that prevents you from killing yourself.” – Albert Camus
Life is inherently absurd and devoid of intrinsic meaning. Nevertheless, we can confront this reality. While the duration of our existence is beyond our control, we hold the power to determine how we spend our time. According to thinkers like Albert Camus, we have three choices:
- Suicide (which represents a denial of freedom)
- Philosophical suicide (accepting falsehoods for convenience)
- Living life with fervor
If we analyze life objectively, nothing holds value until we assign meaning to it. So, why not do the same for our lives? Even though this meaning may seem meaningless after our passing, we can choose to live passionately, embracing the absurd rather than succumbing to despair.
Your Choice
In conclusion, death is the only certainty we face, and fearing it is irrational. Such fear only obstructs our path to a meaningful existence. Choose to combat the absurd by defining your own meaning in life.
