Embracing Discomfort: The Path to Improvement and Success

Chapter 1: The Journey of Improvement

It never truly becomes easier, but you will undoubtedly improve! When you're tempted to quit, remember that you are likely closer to your goal than you think.

For years, I contemplated the idea of enhancing my skills or mastering a craft. Many can relate, whether you're an athlete, a writer, an artist, or a musician. This notion resonates with anyone embarking on a new journey fraught with uncertainty about the outcome.

Pursuing a new goal requires navigating uncharted territory. You must embrace the discomfort of not knowing how things will turn out. To realize your most ambitious aspirations, you need to find a way to be at ease with feeling uncomfortable. Personal development doesn't happen when you choose the path of least resistance.

I came to this realization during my ongoing journey to become a writer. This path is still unfolding, and I've learned that sometimes, the road can feel quite solitary. My experiences have had their ups and downs, but I’ve gained significantly more wisdom from my setbacks than from my successes.

It's important to remember that, in certain endeavors, your efforts do not always correlate with the results. Regardless of how hard you work, there will be times when your efforts go unnoticed. The competition is fierce across all fields, with many others vying for the same achievements you seek. The internet serves as the battleground for this competition.

Yet, don't let this discourage you from pursuing your lifelong aspirations. We often anticipate immediate recognition when we share our first blog post, song, or artwork. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that, initially, many people won't care. Some may even deliberately overlook your contributions.

However, you will discover your smallest viable audience—those who genuinely want to hear your voice and connect with the work you produce. This is your starting point; focus on serving these individuals.

Every new endeavor presents challenges at the outset. You may feel an overwhelming rush of motivation initially, but motivation can be fleeting. While it may ignite your journey, it rarely carries you to the finish line.

As creators, we often scrutinize our work, acting as our own critics. But the truth is, we are not the ultimate judges of our output. Our audience will determine the value of what we create. They will decide whether our work is accepted or dismissed.

As I've mentioned, things seldom become easier; we simply get better. As you pursue your goals, take a moment to reflect on the barriers standing in the way of your success. Often, the greatest obstacle is yourself.

When you choose to begin, remember that you are only in the first year of what could be a ten-year journey. While it may be challenging, the rewards will be worth it. If you're feeling uncertain about the future, don't let that fear paralyze you. Instead, remind yourself with these words: "When you feel like giving up, just know you're close."

This clip from BoJack Horseman encapsulates the sentiment of perseverance, showing that while the journey may be tough, improvement is always within reach.
