Embrace Writing: Why Avoiding 'Don't Do' Lists is Crucial

Written on

Chapter 1: The Pitfalls of Focusing on Negatives

For years, I pondered and absorbed information from various sources before I embarked on my writing journey.

However, I came to realize that this method was insufficient. Engaging in writing, even if just a sentence or two, should accompany extensive reading. While it’s essential to read others' works, spending too much time consuming content without actively writing is counterproductive.

Writing and reading must coexist. You might read extensively but only jot down a few words; yet, refraining from writing altogether is not advisable. Our brains do not comprehend the word "No."

The information you expose your mind to gets stored, and if you frequently read articles outlining what not to do, your brain is likely to latch onto these negative points. This fixation can lead to unintentional repetition of these pitfalls in your writing. Instead, focus on uplifting and encouraging content to inspire your writing process.

Section 1.1: Breaking Free from Mental Barriers

Allow yourself to write without restrictions, especially as a novice or someone feeling stagnant in their creative pursuits. If you’ve been grappling for inspiration for days or weeks, it’s crucial to start by writing whatever comes to mind.

By doing so, you gradually build momentum and find your unique writing style through this liberating exercise.

Section 1.2: Take Action and Write

Ultimately, the key is to write. Set aside doubts and external critiques. You have the authority to decide what to share with your audience. When keeping a writing journal, no harsh judgments are needed—just your thoughts and feelings.

Chapter 2: Embracing a Constructive Mindset

It's vital to engage with content that fosters creativity.

In the video "Unpopular Opinion - 3 Things You Shouldn't Do When Teaching Writing (NO Note-Taking!)", the speaker discusses common misconceptions in writing education, emphasizing the importance of active writing over passive learning.

Additionally, the video titled "What NOT To Do When Writing a Novel: Avoid These Common Mistakes!" highlights frequent errors that writers make and offers insights on how to navigate these challenges effectively.
