Chapter 1: Overcoming Social Media Anxiety
As I embark on writing this piece, I must admit that a hint of nervousness lingers. Despite 15 years of crafting similar content across various platforms, that feeling of unease hasn’t completely dissipated. Nevertheless, I’ve learned how to manage it and keep myself moving forward.
Two years ago, I made the pivotal choice to transition from merely freelancing as a social media manager to diving into entrepreneurship and consulting. Yet, back then, I underestimated the significant hurdles my clients would encounter. It wasn’t about mastering tools like Canva; rather, it boiled down to one overwhelming concern:
What will others think of me?
I understand this paralyzing fear all too well. Reflecting on my past, I regret not sharing more content and even deleting some due to the apprehension of judgment from others. Many individuals restrict themselves from showcasing their true personalities or sharing their insights, all because they fear potential repercussions. But let’s ponder this: even if someone disapproves, what truly happens? And what if someone else appreciates it?
Envision two scenarios:
- Someone isn’t particularly fond of your work.
- Time passes, and you’re left with the regret of not taking that leap.
Between these two options, which seems more painful to contemplate?
When you become overly concerned about others' perceptions, it’s akin to dismantling the very essence of who you are.
Your personality is the cornerstone of your personal brand.
Your business shines brightest when it reflects your authentic self. If you neglect the ‘you’ aspect, it loses its distinctiveness; it’s as if the heart has been removed.
While your products can be replicated, your company can face challenges, and external forces can disrupt your path, one thing remains constant: your personal brand is yours alone. No one can strip that away from you.
The sooner you liberate yourself from the imaginary chains of perceived judgment, the sooner you can create something remarkable and live life on your own terms. That’s true freedom. Begin practicing it today.
In addition to these insights, I have a few practical tips:
People are often less concerned about you than you believe.
Most individuals are preoccupied with their own lives, not yours.
Negative feedback usually has little to do with you.
When someone directs negativity your way, it often stems from their own struggles. They may not even realize they’re quietly envious of the freedom you’ve pursued.
If your message doesn’t resonate with everyone, don’t fret.
It simply means there are others who will connect with it deeply.
Every story has multiple perspectives, and for every viewpoint you encounter, there’s another waiting to be discovered.
Picture yourself two decades from now. What do you think you would regret the most? I suspect it would be not being your authentic self due to others' opinions. So why worry? Let others focus on their own narratives, while you stay true to who you are, especially in the realm of social media.
