# Apple's M2 MacBook Air: Analyzing Opportunities and Challenges
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to the M2 MacBook Air
It seems I miscalculated on this one, didn’t I? My skepticism about an M2 MacBook Air unveiling at WWDC turned out to be unfounded. I repeatedly expressed my disbelief, reasoning that it wouldn't make sense for Apple to overshadow the conference with such an announcement. Yet, an hour into the keynote, John Ternus confidently showcased the M2 logo and announced its debut in the highly regarded MacBook line.
Well, as the character Kryten from Red Dwarf might say, “Spin my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska!” The M2 MacBook Air is set to launch next month, and I couldn’t have been more mistaken in my predictions.
Upon getting my hands on the new MacBook Air, I will share my comprehensive thoughts. However, at first glance, there are several significant issues worth discussing.
Section 1.1: The Continued Presence of the M1 Model
Apple has decided not to discontinue the M1 MacBook Air, which is indeed a positive development. Currently, I'm using mine, and it plays a vital role in my blogging endeavors. Without this device, my work would be severely hampered.
Subsection 1.1.1: My Essential Blogging Tools
This laptop has consistently proven to be the best Apple has ever produced, which raises the bar for any successor. Therefore, the M2 model has a tremendous challenge ahead. The fact that Apple continues to offer the M1 version complicates the decision-making process for potential buyers of the new M2 MacBook Air. Unless you’ve been eagerly anticipating it, the choice between the two models isn’t straightforward.
I’m open to being proven wrong, but I believe the M1’s ongoing availability will be a significant hurdle for the new M2 MacBook Air.
Section 1.2: Pricing Concerns
Oof. The M2 MacBook Air kicks off at £1,249/$1,199—£250/$200 more than its predecessor. If you opt for the highest specifications, you could end up spending a staggering £2,649/$2,499. For that amount, you could purchase a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro for considerably less!
So, what justifies this price increase? According to Apple, the M2 is about 40% faster than the M1 and supports up to 24GB of unified memory. Additionally, it includes features like MagSafe, a larger display, and an improved FaceTime camera. However, once you cross the $1,000 threshold for a laptop, it becomes a complex decision rather than a simple purchase.
Is the M2 MacBook Air truly worth the additional cost? Time will tell, but right now, I know which model I would choose.
Chapter 2: Missed Opportunities and Design Choices
The first video titled "M2 MacBook Air after a week | PROBLEMS? What problems?" explores various issues and experiences with the new MacBook Air.
The second video, "M2 MacBook Air – Ultimate Long-Term Review... Don't Buy ANY MacBook Right Now…", provides insights into long-term usage and purchasing advice.
While discussing pricing, it's evident that Apple missed a significant opportunity with the M1 MacBook Air. They left its price unchanged despite the M2's arrival. Although education discounts are available, a minor reduction in the M1’s retail price would have made it even more appealing. A $100/£100 price drop would have been a brilliant strategy, enhancing the attractiveness of Apple’s most affordable laptop.
Final Thoughts
I am eager to get my hands on the M2 MacBook Air, as I anticipate it will become a focal point for my blog and YouTube channel. This is partly why I launched the Mark Ellis Reviews brand: to dissect challenging purchasing decisions, especially within Apple’s new lineup.
Why would one choose the M2 MacBook Air over the M1? And if the M2 is appealing, wouldn’t it be wiser to invest a bit more for the significantly better 14-inch MacBook Pro? Stay tuned for my insights, and I welcome your thoughts on the M2 MacBook Air in the comments section below!
